Salvador Dali exhibit opening at Brockport
05:00 AM, Feb 26, 2013
One of the last remaining sets of woodblock prints of Salvador Dali’s watercolor illustrations of Dante’s Divine Comedy are going on display at The College at Brockport’s Fine Arts Center Gallery on Thursday (Feb. 28). An opening reception for the free exhibit will be from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Italian government in 1957 commissioned Dali to create the illustrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the author’s birth. The commission was withdrawn after protests that it went to a Spanish instead of an Italian artist, but Dali completed the watercolors nine years later.
“Salvador Dali: Dante’s Divine Comedy,” on loan from the Ewing Gallery at the University of Tennesee at Knoxville, is on display through March 16 and then again from March 25 to 29 at the gallery, 180 Holley St., Brockport. Call (585) 395-2805.
