Arild Remmereit has been named artistic director of the Rochester Chamber Orchestra for next season.

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra board, in a controversial move, fired Remmereit in January from his position as music director.

Community members and some musicians rallied behind Remmereit, first asking the RPO to reconsider and then working to find a way to keep his talent in the area.

David Fetler has been the music director and conductor for 50 years and will step down from those positions in the 2014-15 season, becoming music director laureate.

Entering the 50th anniversary with one conductor, that’s a good milestone,” Fetler said. “As the orchestra kept going for 50 years, I was thinking of retiring anyway at this time. We were very glad that someone of this stature was available.”

Remmereit conducted a successful benefit concert in February with the orchestra, which includes several Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra members.

Fetler said he and Remmereit will each conduct two concerts next season. Fetler will conduct the annual Messiah on Dec. 8 and another concert March 30.

Remmereit will conduct the first chamber concert of the season at 3 p.m. Oct. 27 with a program that includes a Haydn symphony. It also will include something by a female composer, continuing his emphasis on regional roots that he had as music director of the RPO. He also will conduct Feb. 16.

Ingrid Bock, a cellist who plays with both the RPO and the chamber orchestra, says it will be exciting to work with Remmereit again.

He has the ability, she says, to not only teach new pieces but also make musicians look differently at classics by the way he interprets them.

Since the chamber repertoire is so different than for a full symphony, now she will get to play a whole different set of works with him.

Fetler said he “very much enjoyed” Remmereit’s concerts with the RPO, which led to the benefit concert in February after a group of Remmereit’s supporters from the community came to Fetler and suggested it.
