One-tank Trip: Winter Festival of Lights

From Rochester: About 90 miles. A 1 ½-hour drive

Attraction: The Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, begins Nov. 9 and continues through Jan. 14. It features millions of holiday lights and more than 120 animated displays (all located within the Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland and adjacent tourist districts). The outdoor displays are lighted from 5 p.m. to midnight and include the world’s largest Canadian-American Flag, Niagara’s Skylon Tower, the Zimmerman Fountain and the Religions of the World displays.

Admission: Free to view the various illuminations, but donations (a suggested contribution is $5 to $10 per car; $1 per coach bus passenger) are accepted by festival ambassadors at the exit of Dufferin Islands.

Directions: From Buffalo, take Interstate 90 north, across the Grand Island Bridge, to the Robert Moses Parkway. Take the parkway into Niagara Falls to the Rainbow Bridge, off Prospect Street, to cross into Canada. Proceed south on the Niagara Parkway to Queen Victoria Park.
