From Rochester: About 275 miles; a 4½- to 5-hour drive.

Attraction: Winterlude in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Celebrate the joys of winter from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, Feb. 7 to 9 and Feb. 15 to 17 (though many venues are open daily).

Festivities are focused in three main locations: The Crystal Garden in Confederation Park, the Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques Cartier Park, and the Rideau Canal Skateway. Events include live entertainment, skating shows, displays, tours, games, food, sleigh rides and other activities. Admission to most events is free, but there are fees for some events and shows.

Directions: Head east on the New York state Thruway (Interstate 90) to Interstate 81 at Syracuse. Proceed north on I-81 into Canada and Highway 401. Go northeast along Highway 401 to Highway 416; head north on Highway 416 into Ottawa.
