On last week’s funny episode of Parks and Recreation, we learned that April really loves trash. There’s no doubt she’d appreciate the movie Trash Dance, a documentary that attempts to transform garbage into a work of art.
The premise is pretty strange: It follows choreographer Allison Orr as she organizes a dance project featuring garbage trucks and garbage collectors. Watch the trailer to glimpse a few choreographed moments:
Yeah, even after seeing that, I still had my doubts, but Trash Dance already has won several awards at film festivals, including the Silverdocs Audience Award and Special Jury Recognition at South by Southwest.
The film screens Feb. 5 at Lincoln Center, and it arrives in theaters and on DVD in the spring. Call me curious.
Orr serves as the artistic director for Forklift Danceworks, an organization that has put on similar projects (including one with gondolas in Venice!). Learn more about it at forkliftdanceworks.org.
