Jack's Plan B on DVD

As an alternative, critic Jack Garner recommends:
THE DAWN PATROL. This 1930 Oscar-winner was the first sound film for one of the great directors of the golden age, Howard Hawks, and sometimes gets lost in the shadow of the similar air-war saga, Wings, released a few years earlier. The Dawn Patrol got a second chance, though, when Warners remade it eight years later with Errol Flynn and David Niven. This, though, is the still-robust original, and stars Richard Barthelmess and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. The drama revolves around the actions and relationships among members of a World War I flight squadron, but its great value is its stunning aerial dog-fight sequences, some of which were inserted later in other films. Hawks has always been considered one of the great directors depicting the camaraderie of men in war and in the Old West (though he later also made some first-class romantic screwball comedies). This historic and newly issued film is part of the Warner Archive, available at their website or at amazon.com.
Cast: Barthelmess, Fairbanks Jr.
Jack’s rating: 8.
