'Best in Show' features a hilarious cast of characters who compete at a national dog show. (Doane Gregory)/

As an alternative, critic Jack Garner recommends:

BEST IN SHOW. I found it impossible to watch the Westminster Dog Show earlier this month without thinking of this hysterical comedy from 2000, and it has finally arrived on DVD and Blu-ray. It’s the best of a series of wacky, semi-improvised films in which Christopher Guest organizes a grand stable of comic actors around a theme. The wonderful Waiting for Guffman paved the way in 1996, with a tale of small-town theater, and A Mighty Win and For Your Consideration followed in 2003 and 2006, focusing on a folk group’s reunion and a movie company’s Oscar push, respectively. But this is the masterpiece, a very funny look at the machinations and scheming and strutting that goes into the famous Manhattan dog show. The actors all contribute mightily to the humor, and include Parker Posey, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Bob Balaban, Michael McKean, Fred Willard, Jane Lynch, and Guest himself. Few films are as consistently funny as this. And you’ll have to suppress a giggle at any dog show you see in the future.

Director: Guest.
