As an alternative, critic Jack Garner recommends:

CABARET. Can it really be more than 40 years since this great musical won the best actress (for Liza Minnelli), best supporting actor (for Joel Grey) and six other Oscars, including one shocker (especially when viewed in retrospect): director Bob Fosse over Francis Ford Coppola (yes, for The Godfather). Fortunately, Coppola’s deserving film did win best picture, but Cabaret is still a great adaptation of a hit Broadway musical, and a turning point in musicals because of its dark Nazi-era subtext. The film holds up wonderfully and looks fabulous on Blu-ray. Plus, I suspect some of us may have forgotten how great Liza Minnelli was, delivering a riveting, heartbreaking performance. Grey and Michael York are excellent in support in this story, adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s I Am a Camera stories, set in and around a decadent nightclub in Berlin in the 1930s.

Director: Fosse.

Cast: Minnelli, Grey, York, Marisa Berenson.

Jack’s rating: 10.
