Director Oliver Stone paid respect to the “great hero” Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the socialist leader who died on Tuesday at age 58.
”I mourn a great hero to the majority of his people and those who struggle throughout the world for a place,” Stone said in a statement released Tuesday night. “Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history.”
“My friend, rest finally in a peace long earned,” Stone added.
Stone met Chavez in 2007 and interviewed him, along with other South American leaders, for his 2009 documentary South of the Border.
“As is often the case, the man I met was not the man I’d read and heard about in the U.S. media,” Stone wrote in the British newspaper The Guardian. “Based on our experiences in Iraq. Americans must question the role of our media in demonizing foreign leaders as our enemies. The consequences can be brutal.”
