'Coven' flashback: Remember 'American Movie'?

The 1999 documentary followed Mark Borchardt, a Wisconsin-based independent filmmaker who struggled to complete a horror flick called Coven. (Borchardt pronounced it COH-ven with a “long O,” and he seemingly didn’t realize it could be said any other way.)
The action played out sort of like a real-life Waiting for Guffman, with local actors of varying talent and constant financial and personal setbacks. The movie made cult heroes out of Mark, whose enthusiasm and unrelenting passion were pretty astounding, and his laid-back pal Mike Schank, who loved sharing stories of past drug experiences:
