As an alternative, critic Jack Garner recommends:
WILSON. You may be surprised to learn of another film about a U.S. president that was nominated as best picture, but lost. It’s this 1944 film, about Woodrow Wilson, our World War I president and the creator of the ultimately doomed League of Nations. It’s a fascinating and engrossing bit of history about a president and time about which I knew far less than I did of the recently profiled Lincoln. And, as in Lincoln, a British actor, Alexander Knox, plays the president. Knox was also nominated for an Oscar, but lost to Bing Crosby’s priest in Going My Way. Despite its Oscar nominations, Wilson was not a hit at the box office, nor has it been much discussed in the decades since. Wilson was surely one of our most scholarly presidents, coming to the White House from the presidency of Princeton University (with a term as New Jersey governor in between). He also suffered the loss of his wife in the White House, and was remarried there. He’s quite an interesting guy. Long hard-to-find, Wilson is now available at Amazon and from foxconnect.com.
