It’s the witching hour for Rob Zombie.
The rock musician and filmmaker touches on the infamous history of witches in Salem in his new horror movie The Lords of Salem, in theaters April 19. The film is produced by Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) and written by Zombie, who also has directed House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and a recent Halloween remake and its sequel.
In The Lords of Salem, the filmmaker’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, stars as Heidi Hawthorne, a Massachusetts radio DJ and recovering drug addict who receives a strange record in a wooden box marked as coming from “The Lords.” When she plays it, the music triggers a series of horrific flashbacks to Salem’s eerie past and its witch trials, begins a string of weird events around town and possibly ties into the legend of the Lords of Salem possessing the town’s women. There’s also a war in heaven and hell, a child of the devil predicted to rule Earth and a mysterious “beast” skulking around.
The movie also stars Jeffrey Daniel Phillips, Bruce Davison, Meg Foster, Dee Wallace, Maria Conchita Alonso and horror-fan favorite Sid Haig.
Zombie is everywhere in the next few months. In addition to the movie, the horror auteur releases his new album Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor on April 23 and he headlines this summer’s Mayhem Festival tour beginning June 29 in San Bernardino, Calif., along with Mastodon, Five Finger Death Punch and Amon Amarth.
