Robby Benson is getting a new assignment.

The actor, known for his 1970s roles in Ice Castles and Ode to Billy Joe as well as for being the voice of Beast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, will be a professor at Indiana University’s Department of Telecommunications in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Benson began his acting career at 11, and small roles eventually led to bigger roles and then a three-year writing contract at Universal Studios by the time he was 19.

In addition to being familiar with all aspects of filmmaking, he is a songwriter and worked with his daughter, Lyric, on the production of her album, Lyric’s Love Light Revolution, reports the HeraldTimesOnline.com in Bloomington, Ind.

His teaching career has included stints at UCLA, the University of South Carolina, Appalachian State University and the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He had to interrupt his career several times because a congenital heart defect required multiple open-heart surgeries.

He tells the HeraldTimesOnline that his courses will include a yearlong filmmaking course and a class in which students will create and write a Web-based comedy. He begins teaching at IU in the fall.
