As an alternative, critic Jack Garner recommends:
SCHINDLER’S LIST. Prompted by the recent Blu-ray release of Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning Holocaust drama, I gave it my first look since its initial release 20 years ago. It remains as superbly crafted and as deeply moving as ever, one of the best films in the career of one of Hollywood’s most talented craftsmen. As I’m sure you know, the film tells the true story of a flamboyant factory owner and entrepreneur (and member of the Nazi party) who uses Jewish slave labor for his firm, but comes to understand the need to protect as many of the Jewish prisoners as he can. Along the way, we see the horrors of the ghetto and extermination camps, and the evil of leading Nazis, as typified by camp commander Amon Goeth, portrayed with breathtaking intensity by Ralph Fiennes. Liam Neeson contributes the performance of his career, to date, as Oskar Schindler, and Ben Kingsley deeply affects us as Itzhak Stern, the Jewish manager of Schindler’s workers and the man through whom Schindler is inspired to do “an absolute good.” This is essential viewing, and the new Blu-ray makes the film’s Oscar-winning black and white cinematography (by Janusz Kaminski) more stunning than ever.
Cast: Neeson, Fiennes, Kingsley.
Jack’s rating: 10.
