Mama scared up some serious cash at the box office in January, taking the No. 1 spot with a $28 million opening weekend. But the shocks were not just at the box office.

Much of Mama’s success came with the suspense building around Jessica Chastain’s young-at-heart character who takes in her boyfriend’s young nieces — both of whom disappeared mysteriously after their own parents were killed.

As this scene, deleted from the theatrical release but included in Mama’s Blu-Ray and DVD release (out Tuesday) shows, co-writer and director Andy Muschietti had even more suspense up his sleeves.

The scene shows Chastain, growing wise to the malevent force known as Mama, discovering her mysterious hiding place in the closet.

I love this scene,” Muschietti says in the commentary, adding that he found a different way to reveal the pivotal closet discovery. So the scene had to go.

It was a difficult scene to take out,” says producer/co-writer Barbara Muschietti.

No matter how Chastain gets to the discovery, it’s all downhill from there.
