Need to cast a female sci-fi character, even one who’s a green alien? Call Zoe Saldana.
After two Star Trek films and a lead role in James Cameron’s Avatar, the actress guesses that at least she has “a soft spot” for the genre. And she’ll need it for her next role, as cosmic warrior Gamora in the superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy, based on the Marvel Comics series.
“I do have an affinity for people, writers, directors and storytellers who are that creative and have an infinite imagination to imagine the unimaginable and boldly go where no one has gone before,” says Saldana, who stars as Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness.
“I know it sounds cheesy to use that line as a reference but it’s true it takes a lot of talent and courage and freedom to conceive something that you have never seen, or take inspiration from everything around your life and build something that you’ve never actually physically seen with your eyes.”
The actress stays in outer space for Guardians, which Saldana is prepping for now and begins filming next month in England. The movie, which opens Aug. 1, 2014, is a part of Marvel Studios’ “Phase 2” series of films following The Avengers and stars Chris Pratt (Parks & Recreation) as Star-Lord and former wrestler Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Lee Pace and Michael Rooker are also part of the cast, but no word yet on who or what is playing Rocket Raccoon and the tree-like Groot, Gamora’s Guardians teammates who will more than likely wind up being computer-generated characters.
Saldana loved the script and has high hopes for James Gunn (Slither) as the director, yet she doesn’t really know anything else about Guardians. “But that’s the part that has me all excited — I’m walking into an unknown territory,” she says.
When it comes to the costume, “I’m curious,” she admits. “That’s what I want I start to check out, too: Am I going to wear leather? Is it going to be spandex? How’s my hair going to look?”
The one thing for sure is Saldana will be wearing green at some point, since Gamora is an emerald-skinned femme fatale: “I know that, trust me.”
