PARIS (AP) A second jewelry theft has been reported in the French Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival, this time an expensive necklace.
A police official said Thursday that the “high value” necklace was stolen overnight from the luxurious resort town of Cap d’Antibes. She gave no further details and spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak on the record about an ongoing investigation.
Last week, thieves stole about $1 million worth of jewels after ripping a safe from the wall of a hotel room in Cannes. The jewelry was taken from the Novotel room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and jewelry maker that has loaned bling to A-list stars walking the red carpet at the film festival.
Cap d’Antibes is just down the coast from Cannes and, if possible, even more exclusive. Its Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc often plays host to events during the festival, including a party Tuesday night. The hotel said it was not aware of any theft.
Concern about the jewelry situation is very much the talk of Cannes. At a Bulgari party where Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry from her love affair with Richard Burton were on display, security was high.
Jessica Chastain, who wore several Taylor items including an emerald engagement ring, had two low-key security officials at all time. Chastain told USA TODAY, “They are very discreet. I feel very safe. Every once in a while I look around and see there are people looking out to make sure I don’t lose anything.”
