CANNES, France Bruce Dern is making waves at the Cannes Film Festival with his new role in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.
But speaking about the movie on Thursday, Dern, 76, showed off another skill matchmaking. He loved Will Forte so much that he wants to fix his actress daughter up with the former Saturday Night Live star.
“If I could hook him and Laura up, it would be perfect,” said Dern. “Because at the end of the movie I felt I had a son.”
His daughter Laura, who has traveled to the Cannes festival to be with her father, looked on proudly and laughed.
Dern said that Forte felt a little out of water in the road-trip drama with the Academy Award-winning Payne. But he quickly adjusted. Bruce Dern even compared Forte to his good friend and co-star in 1972’s The King of Marvin Gardens, Jack Nicholson.
“Nicholson’s probably the best partner I have ever had in a movie. But Will is right on his shoulder,” said Dern. “This man gave me so much support, for all of those weeks.”
Forte returned the compliment, telling USA TODAY how Dern was full of dramatic acting advice.
“Bruce could not have been more patient,” said Forte. “It was much more comfortable than I thought it would be.”
The two would spend hours in the back of a Subaru Outback in the tale filmed in multiple states.
“I gotta say, I love the road-trip element of it,” said Forte. “I love being in a car. It was really fun to hang out with Bruce for that long. He tells the best stories. I could listen to him for hours and very often I did listen to him for hours. It was a priceless experience.”
