We owe a lot to the Borscht Belt.

The area, which refers to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, helped develop some of the biggest comedians of the mid-20th century, like Jerry Stiller, Jerry Lewis and Sid Caesar. (A third Jerry, Jerry Seinfeld, also performed there in his early days.)

These funny guys contribute to a new documentary about comedy in the Catskills called When Comedy Went to School. Hosted by Robert Klein, the flick takes a look at the resort area where so many Jewish comedians got their start.

As you’ll see in the trailer, Marc Maron pops up here, too. The movie looks fun and promises to delve into “the birth of modern standup”:

When Comedy Went to School opens in New York July 31 before expanding to Denver, Philadelphia, Atlanta and other cities. Go here to find a screening, and learn more at www.whencomedywenttoschool.com.
