I’m a longtime fan of Joe Swanberg’s films — and, considering he’s only 31, it’s pretty astounding that he has already made about 20 of them.

The prolific director/actor/writer first grabbed my attention with 2007’s Hannah Takes the Stairs, which starred a then-unknown Greta Gerwig. Many notable flicks followed, including the excellent Nights and Weekends, Alexander the Last and Uncle Kent. With his latest movie, he steps a little further into the mainstream … but that shouldn’t worry us at all.

Drinking Buddies has a recognizable cast: Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, New Girl’s Jake Johnson and Ron Livingston. (Swanberg has acted in many of his movies, but here he’s just credited as “Angry Guy in Car.”) It follows the friendship between two craft brewery employees (Wilde and Johnson) that feels like it could be something more.

Here’s the trailer:

Swanberg is particularly talented at writing dialogue that feels heartfelt and true, so even if the premise seems simple (guy likes girl he can’t have), the execution should be insightful and entertaining.

Drinking Buddies will be available on demand July 25, a few weeks before it opens in limited release. Enjoy it with your favorite artisanal brew.
