Tom Cruise stuns students as graduation speaker

Running into movie stars in Los Angeles is no big deal, but when a mega star shows up unexpectedly at your graduation, that’s a very big deal.
So imagine how the acting students at the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Studio in Santa Monica, Calif., reacted Sunday when Tom Cruise suddenly appeared before them to deliver what was described as a “stirring speech” for their graduation ceremony.
The New York Post has the story and pictures today, describing how Cruise, dressed in a sharp suit, turned up undetected at the boutique school, which has hosted the likes of Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Anthony Hopkins and Dustin Hoffman in the past.
“It was one of the most inspiring speeches we’ve had,” the paper quoted an anonymous source who was there.
Cruise advised the aspiring actors not to be divas (don’t hide in the trailer), to learn everything by talking to everyone on a movie set, and to be prepared. He recalled how he feared losing his first starring role, in 1981’s Taps with Sean Penn, when he shaved his head for the role and the director freaked out.
Cruise seemed authentic, those who were there told the paper. What’s his connection to the school? His cousin, William Mapother, is a graduate.
Student Greice Santo, who has a role in the upcoming film Heat, told the paper, “That he took time out of his incredibly busy schedule to speak to a graduation class of 60 students was overwhelming.”
Also, she added, “FYI, I’m available for the next Mission: Impossible.’ “
