The plot of Wadjda sounds pretty relatable: A determined, Converse-wearing 10-year-old girl needs money to buy a bike.

What makes the story unique, however, is that the girl happens to live in Saudi Arabia, where women aren’t allowed to ride bicycles — or drive cars or vote, for that matter.

Writer/director Haifaa Al Mansour has made history with Wadjda, the first film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia. I love this trailer, and not just because the title character and I have the same taste in footwear:

Humor, struggle, relationships … this one seems to have it all. Wadjda opens in limited release Sept. 13.
