Artist Ushio Shinohara in 'Cutie and the Boxer.'/

A few weeks ago I mentioned a new documentary called Cutie and the Boxer, which shows the 40-year relationship between artist Ushio Shinohara and his wife, Noriko Shinohara.

The movie shows that living with an artist can be challenging … especially when you’re an artist, too. Today I have an exclusive clip from the film in which Noriko is asked, “Is it difficult being a couple and having the same profession?” Her response is honest and poetic:

We are like two flowers in one pot. It’s difficult. Sometimes we don’t get enough nutrients for both of us. But when everything goes well, we become two beautiful flowers.

The clip also shows the couple’s drawings and paintings. Ushio is known for his “boxing paintings,” in which he punches the canvas. Take a look:

Cutie and the Boxer opens Friday in select theaters.
