See a screening: 'The Trials of Muhammad Ali'
05:00 AM, Aug 15, 2013
Many documentaries have been made about Muhammad Ali, though most of them focus on the fighter’s struggles and victories inside the ring.
With The Trials of Muhammad Ali, director Bill Siegel turns his attention to Ali’s “exile years,” when the boxing champ underwent a spiritual transformation and fought a prison sentence for refusing to serve in Vietnam.
The trailer is so good I don’t need to say much more:
I enjoyed Siegel’s 2002 doc, the Oscar-nominated Weather Underground, so I think the material is in good hands. (I’ll admit I’ve never seen a lot of the footage in the trailer.) And although the movie doesn’t officially open until next week, right now Gathr is offering special advance screenings in several cities.
The film shows in Pittsburgh, Little Rock and other spots before heading to Washington, Atlanta, Denver, Nashville and elsewhere this fall. For a complete list of screening dates, head to kartemquin.com.
