The musical Into the Woods is underway, and it’s hard to see the forest for the big-name stars.
The film version of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine theater production will feature Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and Chris Pine and will be directed by Rob Marshall, who helmed the Academy Award-winning Chicago.
Disney studios announced Monday that production began last week at locations throughout England. The film is slated for a Dec. 25, 2014, release.
Into the Woods features a twist on a number of fairy tales, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, in an intertwining tale centered around a baker, his wife and a witch.
Streep will portray the witch, who wishes to reverse a curse so that her beauty may be restored. Emily Blunt is the baker’s wife, a childless woman who longs to be a mother, and James Corden plays the baker.
Anna Kendrick fills the shoes of Cinderella, who finds herself on a journey of self-discovery. Pine portrays Cinderella’s prince, who is on an endless quest to find his bride. And Depp is the wolf looking for Little Red Riding Hood, played by Lilla Crawford (Broadway’s Annie) who makes her feature-film debut.
