Crystal revisits drama class in 'Monsters' deleted scene

Billy Crystal probably had a bit of a different college experience in drama class from his one-eyed Monsters University character Mike Wazowski.
For one thing, that aspect of Mike’s higher education didn’t make it into the final cut of the Disney/Pixar animated prequel to Monsters, Inc. instead there’s a deleted scene on the home-video release of Monsters U that shows little green guy Mike and rival-turned-pal Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) having to work together to perform in front of their drama classmates. (The movie is available for digital download Tuesday and on Blu-ray Oct. 29.)
“It’s a story about dreams,” Crystal says of Monsters U. “It’s two guys discovering who they are in life, just like college is.”
And in the recording studio, he adds, “everyone went back to how they felt in college and it definitely has that authenticity.”
For the little kids who were first introduced to the Monsters world in 2001, University is their college movie, according to Crystal. And the Tisch School of the Arts grad class of 1970 has built a long and memorable movie career that’s mostly family-friendly. (Maybe don’t show When Harry Met Sally to the wee ones just yet, or else be prepared to have an explanation for that diner scene.)
Crystal has four grandchildren of his own, including a grandson born earlier this year who “loves everything I do,” the actor quips.
They first started to get to know Grandpa’s job by watching the first Monsters, “and then I had to talk like Mike for a year and a half,” Crystal says.
“It’s a thrilling thing to be able to share what you do with your kids and your grandkids. It helps them understand you. You’re not just the guy who comes over and takes them shopping. Mike just gave me a bunch of street cred with them.”
