Who’s up for a road trip?
In the new comedy Ass Backwards, Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael play a couple of clueless pals who hit the road in an effort to win a beauty pageant crown.
The movie boasts a super-funny cast that includes Bob Odenkirk, Paul Scheer, Jon Cryer and, keeping with the “clueless” theme, Alicia Silverstone.
Above you can watch an exclusive scene. I also chatted with Raphael, who co-wrote the movie with Wilson. (You may have spotted her on Parks and Rec last week, too.)
Me: Hi, June! I was eager to see Ass Backwards as soon as I heard about all of the talented people involved. How long have you and Casey Wilson been writing and performing together?
Raphael: Casey and I met at a clown class at NYU red noses and all! We were fast friends right away and started performing a sketch show we wrote at UCB in 2004.
The clip I’m sharing features Alicia Silverstone. Were you a fan of hers before doing the movie? What was she like to work with?
Clueless is one of our favorite movies, and Alicia is a shining light in it. She was amazing and flew overnight from another movie she was working on to shoot with us first thing in the morning. We didn’t treat her as well as she treated us.
We often hear about how Bridesmaids’ success has helped more female-fronted comedies get made in recent years. Was that a factor at all when you were pitching Ass Backwards?
Well we had started shooting before Bridesmaids was released, so I don’t think it helped the original financing of the film. However, it has totally changed the game for female comedies (and I hate that term). Men are more willing to follow the ladies now!
You were a highlight of last week’s Park and Recreation. Are there any plans for your character to return to the show?
Thank you! No plans for Tynnyfer’s return right now, but with a name like that …
And finally, I’ve enjoyed your appearances on several podcasts, and was just wondering if there were any you listen to and recommend?
Note: Ass Backwards is now available on demand. It opens in select theaters Nov. 8.
