At least he’s got his vibranium shield.
The patriotic accessory and an ever-present “A” on his outfit are a couple of the things that ring true for Steve Rogers as he adjusts to the current day in the movie sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. By the looks of the first trailer, however, he does have one more thing from his World War II days: lots of stuff blowing up.
The new film out April 4, 2014, and a follow-up to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger catches up with Steve after he helped save New York City from an alien invasion (see: The Avengers). He’s living in Washington, D.C., still dealing with being unearthed from ice after nearly 70 years and not asking out the nice girl in the S.H.I.E.L.D. statistics department who would probably say yes to a date. “Too busy,” he says to Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) as he jumps out of an airplane, sans parachute, for his next mission.
The first Avenger is now a part of S.H.I.E.L.D. alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and head man Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), who tells Steve, “To build a better world sometimes means turning the old way down. And that makes enemies.”
In getting used to modern times, Steve deals with the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. is proactive when it comes to threats, something he’s a little hinky about “This isn’t freedom, this is fear,” he tells Fury when looking at some of the high-tech but when a colleague is attacked, he becomes embroiled in a worldwide conspiracy and is targeted by assassins. (In one epic scene, he takes out a throng of baddies in an elevator.)
In addition to showing off the airborne moves of the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), the trailer features several action-packed set pieces Cap on a cycle vs. a weaponized plane, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier crashing and burning and introduces the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), a masked mystery man connected to Steve’s past who’s got some serious skills himself. (After Steve tosses it at the back of his head, he dramatically catches Cap’s shield that’s how you know he means business.)
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, The Winter Soldier also stars Emily VanCamp, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo and Hayley Atwell.
