Where were all the petitions and fanboy outcries over Will Arnett taking the voice role of Batman in the upcoming The Lego Movie? There were not any Ben Affleck -style protests, to the relief of The Millers star.
“Perhaps unless people are up in arms about you on the internet, you’re not doing something,” says Arnett. “But I’m just happy that people didn’t notice.”
Arnett got his voice deep down “at the bottom of the barrel” to voice the caped crusader in the film out on February 7. He admits he has never been asked to portray a superhero before.
“I feel like playing a superhero is an experience I would remember, and since I cannot think of it off the top of my head, I’m going to say I haven’t,” he says. “But it’s been awesome.”
To get into character, the comic actor admits he took it to an extreme, even for a voice part.
“From now until this movie is released, I’m going to be wearing tights to stay in character,” he says.
As for the Man of Steel role, filled by Affleck in August to much fan outcry, Arnett knows he was never considered for that part.
“I guarantee you there was never one discussion about me taking it,” says Arnett. “Well, there might have been one discussion at a high level meeting. And then it was like, ‘Okay guys, enough joking around. Let’s get down to the real Batman.’ “
As for Affleck, Arnett is confident he can pull it off onscreen. “He’ll be awesome.”
