'You're Next' builds a better horror heroine

One of the key aspects of making the horror movie You’re Next was making its heroine.
Enter Sharni Vinson, one of the genre’s biggest breakout stars in 2013.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, You’re Next out Friday on VOD and digital HD, Blu-ray/DVD on Jan. 14 chronicles one seriously bad night when home invaders clad in animal masks and wielding crossbows and machetes violently disrupt a family gathering.
In a behind-the-scenes featurette, Barrett discusses how he wrote parts for his friends/colleagues AJ Bowen, Amy Seimetz and Joe Swanberg. Vinson, though, was the butt-kicking newcomer in both the cast and the movie: Her character Erin is a girlfriend to one of the siblings but is also really, really handy at using everyday appliances as weapons.
The Australian actress, who had previously been in Step Up 3D, used a lot of her dance background for what is in many ways an action-movie role.
“I really felt a strong connection to the character. I had been very much seeking a role that gave me the opportunity to show the physicality,” says Vinson, who also is part of an audio commentary with Wingard, Barrett and co-star Barbara Crampton.
Vinson wasn’t one of Wingard and Barrett’s regulars, but at least she had a friend in co-star and roommate Wendy Glenn, who also plays a key role in You’re Next. “When everybody already had their own little family, we came in and had ours as well,” Vinson says.
Glenn’s character Zee is “a classic femme fatale,” says director of photography Andrew Droz Palermo. “The very first shots of her, she’s sitting there smoking a cigarette with smoky-eyed makeup. She just is bad news.”
