Music for your ears at rib and blues fest

The Average White Band is the familiar name Saturday, but right before it you’ll need to check out Chicago’s punked-up retro-soul band J.C. Brooks & the Uptown Sound at the Big Rib BBQ & Blues Fest. There’s a lot of Motown in the band’s original songs, but it also does a killer version of Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.”

The four-day event in Highland Park at Highland and South avenues runs from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. All days are free until 3 p.m., after which there’s a $5 admission charge. Six barbecue teams will be on hand, including smoking rigs from Texas, Florida and Rochester’s Good Smoke BBQ.
