Name: Linh Bui

Age: 22

Bar: One Nightclub & Ultra Lounge and Paddy’s Irish Pub

Residence: Brighton

Did you go to college? I’m currently a full-time student at St. John Fisher College. I’m pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing and will be graduating May 2014.

How did you get into bartending? I’ve always wanted to bartend since I was younger. It looked like such a fun job. I was fortunate to meet the security manager of One Nightclub, who put in a good word for me and got me hired.

How long have you been at your bar? I have been at One Nightclub for one year, and I’ve loved every minute of it. I started at Paddy’s on July 17.

Assuming you frequent your bar, where would you go for drinks if the place shut down? I normally work Thursday through Saturdays every week, so I never get a chance to go out when everyone else does. But on the rare occasion that I do have a night off, I like to check out different bars downtown on East, Park and Monroe Ave.

What’s your least favorite drink to pour? I don’t really have a least favorite drink to make. I love making different cocktails. Some may take longer to make than others, but I won’t mind making them if the bar isn’t too busy.

What drink do you pour the most? At the nightclub, the drinks we serve are simpler, like vodka and cranberry, gin and tonics, rum and Cokes, etc. Long Islands are my favorite to make, because I like to see people having more fun and happy after drinking one of those.

How much should I be tipping? It’s very simple, we’re happy with a $1 per drink.

Is there a song on the jukebox or radio that you hate? If so, why? I like all different kinds of music. Our resident DJs at One do an amazing job giving the crowds what they want to hear every weekend.

What’s the quickest way to get a bartender to hate me? Being rude and obnoxious.

What’s the quickest way to get great service? Being patient and smiling. A quick way to get faster service and to make our jobs easier is to leave the tab open if you know you’re going to be back to the bar to order more drinks, instead of closing out every time.

What’s the worst pickup line or thing you’ve overheard at the bar? I’ve probably heard of every pickup line that ever exists. I don’t mind them though, because they make me laugh as long as they’re not too corny.

Can you share any hangover cures? Staying hydrated with a lot of water and fluids with electrolytes like Gatorade. If you’re not counting calories, I would recommend the triple-thick milkshakes from McDonald’s.

Do you have a full-time or other job? My other job is just being a full-time nursing student. It can get tough at times, juggling both school and work, but I try my best not to slack off and procrastinate so that I can stay on top of all my schoolwork. Sometimes it’s easier said than done, but I’m still managing.

What do you love best about your job? I love the people I work with, because we always have so much fun. They’re like family to me.
